작은 지구(Small earth)
청바지는 100년전에 광부들을 위해 탄생되었지만, 이제는 큰 회사의 CEO도 자사 제품을 홍보하는 시연회 브리핑을 할 때도 입고 나올 정도로 보편화된 패션이다. 땀에 졌고 쓸리면서 그 튼튼한 청바지도 찢어지고 만다. 속 살이 들려다보이는 청바지는 열심히 일했다는 보람의 증거가 아닐까? 그것이 좋아 보였을까? 닳아서 해진 청바지는 이제, 격식을 차릴 필요가 없다는 생각과 자기주도적인 자유로운 삶을 표현하는 수단이 되었다.
일년이 넘도록 사람들은 울타리 밖으로 나갈 수 없는 괴로운 삶을 살고 있다. 인간에게 자유가 얼마나 소중한 지 뼈저리게 느낀다. '아름다운 지구는 영원히 존재한다'라는 잘못된 방심의 결과가 아닐까 싶다. 이웃의 불행을 외면하고 혼자만 행복할 수 없음을 깨닫고 뒤늦게 후회하게 되면서 지구는 결코 크지 않다라는 사실을 알게 되었다.
작품은 두개의 캔버스를 겹쳐서 이루어진다. 위에 올려진 캔버스는 청바지가 닳아서 뚫어진 구멍들을 나열한 형태이며, 뚫어진 틈으로 보이는 아래의 캔버스는 색면추상의 나열된 형태로 이루어져 있다.
나비효과처럼 한참 후에나 지구 반대편에 영향을 주는 것이 아니라 이제는 지구가 너무 작아져서 마치 대가족이 하나의 이불을 덮고 있다는 의미로 각기 다른 피부색을 틈새를 통해서 들어나도록 했다.
“자유는 인류애로 극복해야만 다시 얻어진다.”

Small Earth
Blue jeans were created by miners a hundred years ago, but nowadays, even a CEO of a huge company wears them when giving a demo of their products. In other words, they are very universal fashion items. Blue jeans, which are sturdy and tough, are worn and torn as they are wetted by sweats and rubbed by stuff. Can blue jeans that are worn enough to show skin be a proof of hardworking? Do they look good? Worn and torn blue jeans are now a symbol of informality and a tool of expressing self-directed free life.
People live in a difficult situation. They can’t go beyond their boundaries for over a year due to the pandemic. We feel keenly how important and valuable freedom is to us. This might be the result of wrongful carelessness that ‘The beautiful earth exists forever.” While realizing the fact that we can’t be happy if we neglect neighbors’ misfortune and regretting doing that, we came to know that the earth is not as huge as we thought.
The work is done on the two overlapped canvases. The canvas on top has holes of worn blue jeans arranged, and the bottom canvas seen through the gaps have color-field abstract arranged.
Unlike the butterfly effect, in which things affect the other side of the earth after a while, now, the earth is so small that it is like a large family slept together under one blanket, which is expressed by different skin colors revealed through the gaps.

희로애락(喜怒哀樂)
“기쁨과 노여움과 슬픔과 즐거움”
항상 그렇듯이 행복한 일이 생기면 동시에 어려운 사건이 생긴다. 낭떠러지 끝에 서있는 기분이 들다가도 희망을 주는 동기부여가 생긴다. 지금은 너무 편안하다고 생각이 들 때 항상 불안함이 동시에 엄습해온다. 나이 60이 되니 그렇게 지루하게 들리던 말러 심포니가 귀에 착 달라붙어 지루함이 사라졌다. 말러 음악에서 나의 희로애락이 오버랩 되어 뇌리를 휘감는다. 하늘이 무너져 내릴 것 같은 사건도, 그토록 슬펐던 사연도 시간이 지나고 나면 그 속에서 긍정의 힘과 이겨낼 수 있는 용기를 함께 주었다. 그래서 요즘은 죽고사는 문제가 아니면 아무리 큰 사건이 찾아와도 담담하게 받아들인다.
이번 희로애락(喜怒哀樂) 시리즈는 바로 전의 클라우드(Cloud) 시리즈 컨셉의 연장선상에서 바라보면 이해가 쉽다. 클라우드 시리즈는 어떤 개체들이 계속적인 프랙탈적 생성을 통해서 확장을 반복하다가 인생의 절반(캔버스의 끝부분)에 부딪치면서 다시 원점을 향해서 소멸의 길로 간다라는 인생의 행로를 이야기했다면, 희로애락 시리즈는 그 클라우드에 기록된 폴더 하나하나에 담긴 사건의 일기장을 다 읽지 않아도 폴더에 칠해진 색깔로 그때의 감정을 알 수 있다라는 컨셉이다. 형태적으로는 뚫어진 캔버스1을 통해서 색면으로 나열된 캔버스2를 들려다보는 구조이다.
이 희로애락 컨셉에서 Small earth 시리즈와 Reveal 시리즈를 발견하게 되었다.

HUIROAERAK(喜怒哀樂)
“Joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure”
As usual, happy things accompany difficulties, and vice versa. While I feel like I was at the edge of the cliff, I become motivated for hope. When I feel very comfortable, I am seized by anxiety. As I turned 60, Gustav Mahler’s symphony, which always bored me, charms my ears. Mahler’s music hovers around in my head as it is overlapped with my emotions. Even an incident that felt like the sky would fall in, and a story that was extremely sad gave me the power of positivity and courage to overcome together. Nowadays, I calmly accept anything, unless it is a matter of life or death.
This HUIROAERAK(喜怒哀樂) series can be easily understood in the extension of the concept of the Cloud series, which was the last series. While the Cloud series is about the path of life that certain entities repeat expansion through continuous fractal formations and head to the path of extinction towards the original point as they hit the half of life(the end of the canvas), the HUIROAERAK series is a concept that emotions of each moment can be comprehended by colors on the folders even though we don’t read all the journals about incidents at each folder recorded in the cloud. The structure is that Canvas 2 with color surfaces arranged is viewed through pierced Canvas 1.
I came to discover Small Earth series and Reveal series in this HUIROAERAK series.

Reveal(창틀)
“우리에게 보여지는 형태는 오해일 수 있다.”
동네에 지어진 집들을 보면 앞모습과 뒷모습이 전혀 다른 건축물을 흔하게 보게 된다.
건물의 앞쪽이나 옆쪽, 사람들이 잘 보이는 부분은 대리석이나 화강석으로 마감을 하고 뒤쪽이나 잘 안보이는 부분은 비슷한 페인트로 마감한 건물을 보면서, “비용을 아끼려면 애씨당초 드라이비트로 하시지…” 생각을 하며 지나친다.
대학 1학년 때 배웠던 인식론이 생각난다. 동굴벽에 비친 소달구지의 그림자를 보고 소라고 인식하듯이 우리가 보는 것들이 진실이 아닐 수 있다는 수업이 생각난다. 뚫어진 창틀로 보여지는 것이 진실이 아닐 수가 있으며 창틀을 걷어내면 전혀 다른 모습이 발견될 수도 있다는 내용이 감춰져 있다.
Reveal(창틀) 시리즈는 두개의 겹쳐진 캔버스의 겉과 안은 전혀 다른 내용을 보여준다.
겉은 마크로스코 형태이지만 속은 몬드리안의 구도가 숨겨져 있다.
겉은 엔디워홀이지만 속은 바스키아다.
보여지는 것과 속에 담긴 진실은 엉뚱할 수 있다는 내용이다.
이 컨셉은 나의 맥을 잇는 컨셉은 아니며 오마주의 성격이 강한 컨셉이다.

Reveal(Windowsill)
“Forms we see may be a misunderstanding.”
There are many houses that have totally different front and back appearances in the village.
Those houses have nice finishes of marble or granite at the front that are revealed to people, and in the back that are not noticeable, they are finished with similar color paint. I always think “They should have used the Dryvit finish to save money.”
It reminds me of Epistemology that I learn in the first year of college. In the class, I learned that what we see may not be the truth as we recognize an ox after looking at the shadow of an ox cart reflected on the cave wall. Things seen through a hole of windowsill may not be the truth, and they can be totally different appearance if the windowsill is removed.
The Reveal(windowsill) series shows totally difference contents of inside and outside of two layered canvases.
While the outside is Mark Rothko style, the inside has Mondrian’s structure.
The outside is Andy Warhol, but the inside is Basquiat.
Things that are seen and the truth in them can be totally different contents.
This concept is not the one in my own context, but has the characteristic of homage.
