문명을 일궈온 곡식 알갱이 그림에 박히다

중심 집중적 구조의 작품을 많이 발표해 왔던 문수만은 최근 몇 년간의 작업에서 쌀이라는 소재를 형태소로 활용한다. 무한을 연상시키는 형태의 도열이나 모노크롬 분위기의 정제된 화면에서 정신성은 이어진다. 무(無), 공(空). 허(虛) 같이 정형화되기 힘든 관념 또한 담기의 대상이 될 수 있을 것이다. 반대되는 것의 종합에 있어 둥근 구도는 끝과 끝이 이어져서 수월하다. 수평적 구도의 경우 화면 바깥으로도 연장되는 느낌을 살리면서 무한과의 관계를 설정한다. 그의 작품은 시작과 끝의 중간 토막을 포착한다. 이 중간은 무한의 한 토막으로서의 유한이며, 작품의 변주는 무한하다. 다양함이 하나로 집중되는 모습으로 화려함과 명상적 분위기를 동시에 살린다. 어떤 색이 공존하든 작가는 부드러운 연결을 지향한다. 그것이 풍경이라면 당연히 하늘이나 바다, 또는 그 모두이며, 화면 안의 색 띠는 일출같은 중요한 사건을 알리는 증후이자, 그 사건의 축이 되어주는 수평선이나 지평선 역할을 한다. 

화면을 동심원으로 또는 수평으로 빼곡이 채우는 입자는 색이며 빛이고, 양자 간의 전이이며, 지상의 중요한 현실을 상징하는 물질이기도 하다. ‘Cloud’라는 제목은 하늘을 배경으로 떠 있는 가장 자연스러운 것을 암시함과 동시에, 현대 디지털 문화에서 공유되고 있는 정보의 저장고 또한 상징한다. 저장고를 채우는 것은 쌀 알갱이 모양의 입자인데, 여기에서 작가는 물질과 문화의 관계를 다룬다. 점이 기하학적이고 관념적 요소라면, 쌀은 유기적이고 물질적인 요소다. 규칙적으로 배열된 형태소는 문자같은 느낌도 있다. 쌀은 문명, 즉 구술성을 넘어서 문자성에 기반한 문명을 가능하게 했다는 점도 강조될 수 있다. 붓으로 직접 찍지 않는데도 다양함이 가능한 이유는 복잡한 제작 공정 때문이다. 붓작업으로만 하는 것이 더 쉬울 수도 있음에도 불구하고 굳이 기계적 공정이 한 두 번이라도 들어가는 이유는 계산이 개입된 다양성이 가능하기 때문이다. 그의 단색화는 화려하고 세련된 도시 문명부터 한반도에서 쌀농사를 지었을 당시까지 소급되는 시간대를 포함한다. 

특히 작가는 쌀을 의미하는 상형문자 ‘米’를 염두에 둔다. 중심이 있는 사통팔달의 구조는 그의 이전 작업과 연속적이다. 문수만의 작품에서 농경문화의 흔적은 토기와도 관련된다. 대표적인 노동 집약형의 사업인 농사는 인간의 사회화에 큰 역할을 했다. 사각형 형태의 작품에 수평적으로 배치된 입자들은 미지의 문자열과 겹쳐지며, 실재와 정보의 호환성을 말한다. 이번 전시작품들의 제목인 [크라우드 no]에 포함된 저장소는 디스크에 사건들의 정보를 모아 놓은 것을 의미한다. 모아 놓은 잉여분의 쌀이 문명을 일궈냈듯이 정보는 쌀처럼 에너지의 비축이다. 농사가 시작된 신석기 시대가 혁명이라면 정보의 시대도 혁명이다. 수평 구도에 내재 된 자연적 이미지에 정보라는 차원을 더한 작품들은 다양한 은유로 뻗어나가는 최소한의(minimal) 예술이다. 예술은 물질과 정신의 가교 역할을 한다. 문수만이 선택한 쌀이라는 형태소는 물질을 대변하기에 충분한 상징성을 지닌다. 그것이 어떤 정서적, 정신적 울림을 낳는지는 관객 각자의 몫이다.

Moon, Sooman who have published a lot of works of the central structure utilizes a material of rice as a morpheme in their work in recent years. Spirituality is connected in the refined screens of lines of shapes or monochrome atmospheres. The concept which is difficult to be standardized like nothing (無), voidness (空), and weakness (虛) can be subject to put them into their paintings. The round structure in putting opposite things together is easy as the ends are connected to each other. The horizontal structure emphasizes the feeling to be extended to the outside of the screens and sets the relationship with infinity. His works of art catch pieces in the middle of beginnings and ends. The middle is limited as a piece of infinity and variations of his works of art are limitless. It simultaneously emphasizes splendid and meditative atmospheres as diversity is concentrated into one. The artist aims at smooth connection of every color. If it is scenery, it is the sky, the ocean, or all of them and the color bands in the screens play a role of signs to inform you of important events like sunrise and horizon to be their axes. 

The particles which fill the screens to be concentric circles or be horizontal are the colors and light, transfer between both sides, and the material which symbolizes the important reality on the ground. The title of 'Cloud' implies the most natural thing against the sky and at the same time, it also symbolizes a store of information to be shared in modern digital culture. The grain-shaped particles fill a store and the artist treats the relationship between material and culture. If the points are geometric and abstract elements, rice is an organic and material element. Morphemes which are regularly arranged feel like letters. Rice can emphasize civilization, in other words, the point to enable civilization based on literacy beyond orality. It is filled with diversity even though he did not personally dot with a brush because the complicate production process. Despite only brushwork is easier, mechanical process is added one or two times because of diversity which can be done by involving calculation. His monochromatic paintings include time slots from splendid and refined urban civilization to rice farming in the Korean Peninsula.      

Especially, the artist focuses on ‘米’, hieroglyph which means rice. The structure of running in all directions in the center is connected to his previous work. Traces of farming culture in Moon, Sooman's works of art are related to earthenware. Farming, the representative labor intensive industry, played a huge role in human socialization. The particles horizontally placed in the square works of art overlap unknown character strings and mean compatibility between information and existence. The store included in [Cloud no], the title of work of art exhibited this time, means a collection of information of events in disks. As rice of surpluses collected achieved civilization, information is a reservoir of energy like rice. If the Neolithic Age when farming began is revolution, the information age is also revolution. The works of art which added a level of information to natural images which are inherent in the horizontal composition are minimal art which stretches out to various metaphors. Art acts as a bridge between material and mind. The morpheme of rice chosen by Moon, Sooman has enough symbolism to represent material. It produces emotional or mental echoes and it's every audience for himself.
