청자 상감운학문 매병 (국보 제68호)의 3차원 형태를 2차원으로 펼쳐놓은 작업이다. 천년 전 청자를 빚는 도공이 현세에 나비로 환생해서 자기 작품을 되돌아본다는 간단한 내러티브로 출발하여, 천민으로 살면서 청자작업에 혼을 불태워 오늘날 소중한 유산을 남긴 선조 도공들의 애틋한 삶을 재조명한다는 것이 작품의 주제이다. 그 때 도공들의 힘든 삶을 조금이나마 가까이 다가가고 싶은 마음에 물감을 수십 겹 덧바르고 깎아내어 도자기의 상감기법을 물감으로 재현하였다. 작품에서 항상 등장하는 나비의 역할은 이전의 박제된 나비형태의 작품에서는 역설적으로 자유에 대한 강렬한 의지를 표현했다면, 근래의 청자 위의 나비가 올려진 작품에서는 역사의 시간을 넘나드는 매개체 역할로 나비의 상징성이 변화되었다. 리얼한 나비의 묘사와 회화적 상감기법의 청자표현으로 관람자들에게 현실과 비현실의 혼돈을 주는 작품형식은 사실적 재현과 환영 효과로의 유도로 비움과 채움, 현실과 비현실, 허구와 실존의 경계에 대한 작가의 탐구적 자유의지에서 비롯되었다.

This work spreads the 3-dimensional form of celadon inlay Unhakmun Maebyeong (National treasure no.68) to 2-dimension. The theme starts from a simple narrative, a celadon potter of a thousand years ago reincarnates and looks back on one's works, re-illuminating the ancient potters' earnest life who left precious legacy today. Here, I coated paints scores of times and cut, wishing to get closer to the potters' hard life during that period, in pottery inlay technique. The role of butterfly, which frequentl appears in my work, in the previous ones such as stuffed butterfly, strong will to freedom was expressed paradoxically, however nowadays works where a butterfly is put onto the celadon shows a change of symbolicity of butterfly to a medium to cross the time of history. With the description of real butterfly and expression of pictorial celadon inlay expression, this work gives a confusion between reality and unreality, which comes from the artist's inquiring free will to the boundary between emptiness and filling, reality and unreality, fiction and real through the induction to realistic reproduction and illusionary effect.
